Tony Valentine is an expert at spotting cheats. He's tossed them out of gambling casinos from Atlantic City to Monaco. But though Tony has never met a scam he couldn't crack, his son and partner, Gerry, has just walked into one with a body count. What started as a conman's deathbed confession turns into a deadly Las Vegas grudge match during the world's biggest poker tournament. While Gerry tangles with the Vegas mob, Tony enlists the aid of an aging grifter to save the tournament, and stop a blind player who's out to heist it.
The plot, characters, and performance in this recent audio are aces. A pair of detectives, father and son, are hired by casino management to find gambling cheaters. The father, Tony Valentine, is a retired Atlantic City cop; son Gerry is a retired scammer himself. They're drawn to the World Series of Poker in Las Vegas, where the winning prize is $10 million. Alan Sklar is the perfect reader for this poker party. When called for, he's straight as an arrow, but his voice purrs as he portrays a Texas cardsharp. Listening to this entertaining story with card-playing tips and lore throughout is a sure thing. A.L.H. Winner of AudioFile Earphones Award (c) AudioFile 2006, Portland, Maine
